Düsseldorf Coffee is a joint project between EINE WELT FORUM Düsseldorf eV and the roastery VIER RVTC. The fairly traded coffee from the area around Moshi, a small town in Tanzania, reaches Düsseldorf in a transparent and completely traceable way and meets the criteria of fair trade. This results in economic, social and ecological advantages for producers, consumers and the environment.
The beans for Düsseldorf coffee come from a small community at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, not far from the city of Moshi. There, members of the Wachagga people grow coffee in small plots called Chaga Gardens. The region is known for its traditional organic cultivation method, which has existed for several centuries and meets the requirements of sustainable and climate-friendly agriculture. Personal contact makes the entire Düsseldorf coffee supply chain transparent. On site, the farmers take care of the coffee plants and harvest the cherries. The pickers pick the red, ripe coffee cherries from the tree by hand, ensuring a particularly high quality. The cherries are then taken to the washing station for further processing, where the workers sort them again and remove the pulp and peel. The so-called green beans are then packaged and taken to the auction houses. Since the coffee trade in Tanzania is regulated by the state and depends on the market price for coffee (C-Market Price), the coffee beans can only be sold there through auction houses. The price of the coffee is negotiated in advance between the VIER roastery and the cooperative. The roastery subsequently increases the auction price up to the previously agreed coffee price. A neighboring plantation takes care of the export, which supports the Rononi free of charge in return for further training and quality classifications by the VIER RVTC roastery.
As soon as the coffee beans arrive in Germany, all further processes are carried out by the roastery. The coffee beans are roasted and refined in the middle of Düsseldorf's old town. The roasting masters ensure that the beans are roasted to the ideal degree so that the aroma of Düsseldorf coffee is clearly recognizable.
